Hardwood flooring, mainly the engineered one is difficult to install without proper adhesives. Adhesives play a key role in the process of hardwood floor installation and give the floor the bonding that keeps it in place for decades to come. That is why you should be very aware about the adhesives while laying your hardwood floor. Generally, most of the adhesives work by creating a bond between the substrate and the flooring by means of a chemical reaction. Most of the adhesives work on the same principle of shifting from a liquid to a solid state, the only difference is the carrying agent or catalyst that activates them. There are certain different types of wood flooring adhesives, which include:
Water based adhesives: are regarded as very low emission adhesives and are the first choice for health and environmental conscious. Water based adhesives are free of solvents or VOCs and safe to use at home. But the range of the water-based adhesives is limited when considered for applications with certain types of wood floor or sub floor
Solvent based adhesives: are another type of adhesives well known in wood floor installation over a long time offer a wide array of application uses but some of them contain non-hazardous solvents which will evaporate around the first weeks of installations.
Urethane based/ moisture-cure adhesives: are well known to offer the largest range of application uses and maximum installation security. These are quite expensive compared to other adhesives. The best part is that they can be used for all kinds of floors and can be applied in any circumstances.
Powder adhesives: is another type which usually work pretty alike the water based adhesives. The only difference is except you add the water yourself and thus do not have to worry about freezing or moving of extra weight.
